Vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame
Dr. Brené Brown, Ph.D. is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past thirteen years studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.
Dr. Kristen Neff Defines Self-Compassion as “having compassion for oneself is really no different than having compassion for others.”
For many of us brought up in Western cultures, self-compassion is not something that we are comfortable with. Until recently it wasn’t learned socially or taught formally at school. Being self-compassionate is a behaviour that we may not be familiar with. Nor a trait we may feel comfortable with, however it is transformational. Research evidences the benefits from calming our nervous system, to healing self-criticism and shame (see Dr. Brené Brown). Dr. Neff’s website is a really good place to start.
